Philosophy and Practice for the Modern Witch

How to Tell if Your House is Haunted (and what you can do about it)

Sometimes a house carries more than just memories and experiences with family. Sometimes it carries a dark, haunting energy that lives inside the wooden walls like a mold. Other times it carries the benevolent spirit of someone you’ve lost, but need to move on from in order to find peace.

The air changes before anything else does. You know that shift—the sudden prickle on the back of your neck, the way a room can feel instantly crowded, the mysteries that can’t be explained.

Our homes are sanctuaries, spaces where we drop our armor, brew our tea, and sink into our truest selves. But sometimes, the walls hold onto people. Whether you’ve recently moved into a space with a history, or your long-time haven has suddenly begun acting strange, it’s natural to wonder if you’re sharing your home with an unseen guest.

If you’re sitting on your couch right now, looking suspiciously at a dark corner, let’s unpack how to tell the difference between mundane house quirks and actual metaphysical activity—and exactly how to handle it with grace, authority, and standard energetic hygiene.

Part 1: The Signs of a True Haunting

Before we pull out the incense and salt, we always rule out the mundane. A drafty window is just a poorly sealed window, and scratching in the walls usually means you need an exterminator, not an exorcist.

But when the physical explanation doesn’t fit, energy speaks in distinct ways.

  • First of all, trust your intuition, especially if you identify as female. But make sure you’re distinguishing between your anxiety and fear, and actual intuition. Fear says, “I can’t handle this.” Intuition says, “I know.”
  • The Unexplained Atmosphere: A room that stays ice-cold regardless of the thermostat, or a heavy, dense static in the air that makes it feel hard to be yourself.
  • The Sensation of Being Watched: If your skin crawls in a specific hallway or you feel a gaze on you while standing at the kitchen sink, your energetic boundaries are picking up a presence.
  • Displaced Objects: The classic “Disappearing Object Phenomenon.” You leave your favorite silver ring on the dresser, it vanishes for three days, and then reappears exactly where you left it.
  • Animal Intuition: Pets are incredible barometers for the unseen. If your cat is tracking something invisible across the ceiling or your dog refuses to cross the threshold into the spare bedroom, pay attention.
  • Echoes of the Past (Residual Energy): This isn’t a conscious spirit, but a psychic footprint. If you hear muffled footsteps at exactly 11:15 PM every night, or feel a wave of sudden, unearned sadness in a specific corner, you are likely experiencing a residual loop—an emotional recording stamped into the environment.
  • Detailed dreams of demons, people you’ve lost to death, etc. Especially if you’re lucid, they’re terrifying, you wake up with sleep paralysis, or you wake up feeling frozen with fear.

Part 2: Discerning the Energy

In witchcraft, we don’t treat every spirit like a threat. Most entities are simply lost, confused, or entirely indifferent to us. Before you react, take a moment to analyze the flavor of the energy.

The Witch’s Rule of Thumb: Fear feeds chaos. Approach the situation not as a victim being intruded upon, but as the sovereign ruler of your space.

  • Ancestral or Friendly Guides: Sometimes a passing spirit is attracted to your light, your practice, or is a loved one checking in. This energy feels warm, familiar, or mildly curious, never threatening.
  • Earthbound/Lingering Spirits: These are human consciousnesses that haven’t crossed over, often attached to the structure or land. They might be lonely or stubborn, occasionally causing minor disruptions to get your attention.
  • Negative or Oppressive Entities: This is rare, but real. If the energy feels actively hostile, drains your vitality, triggers constant arguments among your family, or causes genuinely terrifying nightmares, it’s time for a firm eviction notice.

Part 3: What to Do About It

If you’ve confirmed you have a roommate of the ethereal variety, you have options. You do not have to live in fear, and you do not have to pack your bags. You hold the keys to this physical realm.

1. Reclaim Your Sovereignty (Speak Up)

Spirits exist in a different density, but they understand intent and authority. Open your front and back doors, stand firmly in the center of your home, and speak aloud with absolute conviction.

“I am the master of this house. Only love, light, and aligned energy are permitted here. If you do not serve my highest good, you must leave this space immediately. You are not welcome here.”

2. The Smoke, Sound, and Water Cleansing

Do a thorough, physical deep-clean first (dust and clutter give stagnant energy a place to stick). Then, introduce the elements to move the air.

  • Smoke: Light a bundle of rosemary, garden sage, or frankincense resin. Move counter-clockwise (banishing motion) through every room, ensuring the smoke reaches the corners, closets, and under the beds.
  • Sound: Spirits dislike high-frequency, disruptive sound waves. Walk through the space ringing a brass bell, clapping loudly in stagnant corners, or playing a singing bowl to shatter the heavy atmosphere.
  • Holy Water: Obtain some holy water from the church (you can also find blessed annointing oils online) and annoint the doorways and windows in your home, focusing on rooms that have a dangerous energy, by drawing an X with the oil using your fingertip. You can pray while you do this. Demonic spirits are terrified of the Christian God, and some of the other deities as well.

3. Laying Down the Wards

Once the space is cleared, you must seal it so the energy doesn’t just creep back in.

  • Black Tourmaline: Place a piece of black tourmaline or smoky quartz at the four outer corners of your property or home to act as an energetic shield.
  • Salt Barriers: Line your windowsills and external doorways with a thin line of sea salt or black salt to block crossing entities.
  • Protective Oils: Anoint your doorframes with a drop of rosemary or clove essential oil, drawing an invisible solar cross or pentacle for protection.
  • Candles: Burn white and black candles every time the moon is full, for purity, balance, and stability in the home. This is especially effective when the veil is thin.

The Takeaway: Don’t Let Spirits Boss You Around.

Remember, your physical body and your presence in this material world give you the natural upper hand. Your home is an extension of your own energetic field. By clearing the clutter, speaking your truth, and setting firm spiritual boundaries, you can transform any haunted house back into a sacred, peaceful sanctuary.

Trust your magic, trust your gut, and keep your hearth bright.
